Six Japanese Firms to Co-develop 2G/3G Mobile Phone Platform

On February 28, NTT DoCoMo, Renesas, and four mobile phone providers, including Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Electric, Sharp, and Sony Ericsson announced that they will jointly develop a 2G/3G compatible mobile phone platform, using Renesas' chips and Symbian operating system. This 2G/3G platform, to be available by the third quarter of 2008, will support both HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Pocket Access)/WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications)/GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)/EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) standards.
